Andreas is dropped off by a bus at a remote location, where he is greeted by a man who is expecting him, and who drives him to an apartment that he says now belongs to Andreas, and explains to him that he will begin work at an accounting firm. When Andreas arrives at work, everybody is friendly and accommodating, but somehow everything seems a bit odd. As Andreas tries to settle in to this world, it only makes him more and more uneasy about the surroundings in which he finds himself.
Eleven-year-old Maria loses her little brother to cancer. Her mother retreats into deep depression; her father attempts to keep the family emotionally afloat. Sent to her grandparents' home for the summer, Maria meets Jacob, also an eleven-year-old, but with a completely different attitude to life and loss - he is an outgoing, adventurous latch-key kid with wisdom way beyond his tender years.
