In 1867, an ex-Confederate general, Jackson Hardin (Martin Sheen), still holds a grudge against the Union. He and his legendary "Floating Outfit" refuse to let the ravages of war dictate how they'll live in the impoverished South. Across the Rio Grande, a French army divides the occupied Mexican nation and casts an avaricious glance on the weakened American states. Kwagga Robertse, who owns a farm shop in the fictional Southern African country of Nambabwe, is upset when the UN sends a platoon of incompetent soldiers with the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (U.N.T.A.G.), to monitor the peace process. Mackay and his second-in-command, Captain Zapman are offered a valuable diamond and they must pay 200,000 USD to Duan Robertse, Kwagga's competitive brother trying to buy a farm left to them by their dead father.
