isinherited by wealthy dad amateur jockey Bill goes to work incognito at racing stables of Stella Barrington, who has inherited father's racing stables but stable is in trouble cos she spends on retaining dad's slowcoaches. Bill lands job of head stable lad; he could be the man to raise cash via a betting coup on stable rogue (tamed by Bill) Flying Fifty-Five. Confusion arises when he's mistakenly reported as murdered. Also he's being blackmailed for passing dud cheque.

In the capital Sam Small becomes mixed up in a series of adventures including a plot to steal Lady Heckdyke's pearls and the romantic relationship between Heckdyke's son and Small's cousin Betty. Mistakenly arrested for the theft of the pearls, Small has to race to reach Crystal Palace in time for the competition.
