One of the twin sons of a family gets stolen during a train journey, after which the child grows up in another family as the son of a childless couple, as Vetrivel aka Vel (Surya). Mathew (Nivin Pauly) borrows money from loan shark Vatti Raja (Simhaa) for his sister's wedding, & after losing his job, is unable to pay it back. On his 3rd month of paying off the loan by borrowing from elsewhere, he finally runs out of options & faces a deadline from Raja to pay off the loan before 5 PM that day. The rest of the movie comprises of events leading upto Mathew's deadline as he struggles to raise money for Raja & hold onto it.

At the behest of his lawyer friend Shekhar (Y.G. Mahendran), ace Supreme Court lawyer A.C. Raja (Mammootty) takes up the case of Sundar (Jaishankar), a middle-aged family man convicted of killing his younger brother Balu's (Sarath Kumar) wife Vijayalakshmi (Sreeja) after raping her. Helping Raja's motives was the fact that Sundar's sister Hema (Amala) was someone Raja had tried wooing a few years ago.
