The first eunuch of the emperor has managed to have a major opponent condemned to death and his family banished from the empire. In order to avoid a revenge of his victims, the eunuch sends his secret police to assassinate the deportees. The ambush is to be carried out at the inn of the Dragon Gate, an isolated place close to the border. Director Lam Fook Dei takes the helm for this historical martial arts effort, which takes the viewer back to the time when the Shaolin Temple was in its infancy. This film recounts the life of Tamo (Chen Sing), the historic monk who not only helped to create the Shaolin Temple, but also proved elemental in developing the five animal forms of kung fu.
The film begins with the slaughter of the master and most of his household. If you are familiar with martial arts film, you'll realize that this is a very typical sort of plot--though how it occurs is a bit differently--with some weird contact poison. Just a bit later, the dead master somehow has come back to life and his surviving student is naturally surprised!! It can't be him, but he DOES seem to have all his old kung fu skills. What gives?!
