Arizona Ranger Larry Grant is posing as an outlaw while hunting for an outlaw gang, secretly led by Lance Corbin, that is stealing silver in Mexico and smelting it into bars for sale in the United States. "Pop" Hodges runs an equipment store and a fishing boat as blinds for a gold-smuggling operation, unknown to his niece, Susan Clarke who is engaged to deep-sea diver Mike Sloan. Mike knocks out a member of the fishing-boat crew who is trying to steal gold from Hodges' storeroom. Hodges kills the man and convinces Mike he did it in the fight. Mike replaces the dead man on Hodges' boat and postpones his marriage to Susan.
A Government agent is sent to track an outlaw who has stolen gold boulion. The chase leads into a desolate desert region where the agent is forced to utilize his survival skills.

Matt Boone kills Bull Clark in self defense in a crooked poker game, and leaves Waco as he is certain he would not get a fair trial. He joins an outlaw gang led by Curly Ivers, whose lieutenant is Lou Garcia, a killer. Following a bank holdup in Pecos, Matt is captured. Two of Waco's leading citizens, Richards and Farley, pay the Pecos sheriff the reward Waco had posted for Matt and bring him back to Waco. There, they tell him they want him to be the sheriff and drive out the lawless element.
Jeff Curtis (Rod Cameron), a wagon-master on his way to accept the job of leading a pioneer train from Joplin, Missouri to the Oregon territory, picks up Ben Wilkins, a young boy who has run away from the train because train captain Cyrus Cook wouldn't allow him to take his dog on the trip.
