An old, lonely man who lives next to a now rarely used well reflects on his life: on his family and also the people who would visit to take water from his well. He seems to see the past in nostalgic terms and the present as something far more grim and hopeless and so goes about building a coffin for himself.

A biopic of the great Ukrainian poet and cultural icon Taras Shevchenko told through a series of flashbacks. The film, which borrows its title from one of Shevchenko's better known and more controversial works, follows his life from his humble beginnings in serfdom, to his becoming of a house servant for a Russian artistocrat and his blossoming into a great poet and artist in the years that followed. It was that which follows, however, that bookmarks the beginning and ending of the film.
