Ludvík Jahn, a university student in 1950s Czechoslovakia, sends a playful political joke on a postcard to his girlfriend. Denounced by his peers, he is expelled from the Communist Party and sentenced to years of hard labor in the military. Decades later, he attempts to orchestrate a calculated personal revenge against the former friend who betrayed him.
