After 20 years in the army, Will Bastion (Morrison) is forced to resign. He returns home to Raukura to bury his father, the chief of the Ngati Kaipuku iwi. Estranged from his roots, he rejects his birthright to inherit that mantle which then passes to his younger brother, firebrand Kahu (Makoare).
