I, an Actress (1977) - Short Film
A 10-minute film that shows him [Kuchar] at work with one of his actress students... (New York Times)
Hold Me While I'm Naked (1966) - Short Film
A very direct and subtle, very sad and funny look at nothing more or less than sexual frustration and aloneness. {ubu)
Wild Night in El Reno (1977) - Short Film
While the 1977 film Wild Night in El Reno is not the first of Kuchar's films to have been shot in Oklahoma, it is the earliest in which weather is the principal character. The only human beings seen in the six-minute piece are a woman briefly shown trying to use a payphone during a downpour, and the filmmaker himself, posed enigmatically beside graffiti proclaiming that "Jimmy Rush is a Pussy". (SenseOfCinema.com)
Eclipse of the Sun Virgin (1967) - Short Film
Bridging that weird void between pornography and a poignant search for one's self, this bit of cinematic splendor slips us into a dimly lit greasy place that cannot be shared with others. (imdb)
Pagan Rhapsody (1970) - Short Film
Again, this is one of the short films made by George Kuchar, but where his other movies are about (hidden) homosexuality and the way the world deals with this, 'Pagan Rhapsody' is more about the loss of identification in these times (even though the short film was made almost 40 years ago, the message stays alive). (imdb)
A Reason to Live (1976) - Short Film
30 mins of fever-pitched melodrama, complete with infidelities, suicide, bowel dysfunction, alcoholism, tragic accidents and bad weather. (imdb)
A big, colorful tapestry about rumors that are in all of the previous UFO movies. A loose story line that weaves in and out of the UFO phenomenon.
Forever and Always (1978) - Short Film
A marriage on the rocks that hurts the heart almost as much as the colors hurt the eye. "... a full color portrait of a break-up that comes closer than any other to being an operetta."
Cyclone Alley Ceramics (2000) - Direct-to-Video
Kuchar is in a motel room in Oklahoma (where his Bronx accent must stand out in this surrounding), whose only companion is this ceramic doll (whose mouth is morphed in post-production to seem like it is talking). (imdb)
Scarlet Droppings (1991) - Direct-to-Video
Taped in Normal, Illinois, during the height of autumn, a snapshot of a young girl triggers a meditation on dying innocence and sizzling sausages as a low, winter sun ignites the smoke of greasy longings and meat-eating hunger. (imdb)
A Passage to Wetness (1990) - Direct-to-Video
Off screen, Kuchar muses on strangers, old friends and several pets such as a one-eyed cat. This experimental video highlights loneliness and the simple act of being.
The Cage of Nicholas (1994) - Short Film
A 10 minute short by George Kuchar which documents a visit with producer Christopher Coppola (nephew of Francis Ford Coppola and brother of Nicolas Cage), during which Coppola rambles on about cooking, film tricks, and his shaved head.
Pussy on a Hot Tin Roof (1961) - Short Film
Experimental film, a melodrama that ends with an all-consuming fire. (mubi.com)
The Mongreloid (1978) - Short Film
A man, his dog, and the regions they inhabited, each leaving his own distinctive mark on the landscape. Not even time can wash the residue of what they left behind. (Letterboxd)
Weather Diary 3 (1988) - Direct-to-Video
George goes to Oklahoma, but there's a lull in storm activity. It's spring, and though there's romance in the air, the lightning just doesn't strike; so George makes his own rain--of sorts. Despite the drought, the videos must go on. (vdb.org)
One of Kuchar's few feature-length works is this ribald pastiche to postwar Hollywood melodrama. (Mubi)
The film might seethe with violence and sex, the two most attractive things you can put on the screen, but beneath them a twisted outlook pervades. (mubi.com)
Temple of Torment (2006) - Short Film
A videoscape diary of the horror of being enclosed with a television.
Holidaze (1994) - Direct-to-Video
George spends quality time with his friends Karen and Carla in this holiday video. Featuring whizzing geometric irises, stock footage of angelic-looking kids opening presents, and MIDI versions of Christmas songs. It became a tradition for Kuchar to break out the camera during his friends’ holiday festivities, but HOLIDAZE is unique for its visual verve, with lo-fi effects reminiscent of an arcade game. (Letterboxd)
Video Album 5: The Thursday People (1987) - Direct-to-Video
A documentary on Curt McDowell’s final days.
Weather Diary 6 (1990) - Direct-to-Video
George is going to El Reno once more to chase storms in a city symphony.
