An American scientist fakes a defection into Communist East Germany in order to get hold of defense secrets.

A monk's prayers are answered after he calls for God to close to shut a brothel and club that is next door to a church in a small German town. Miraculously, his prayers are answered when the premesis vanish and reappear on an island in the North Sea. The miracle is picked up the world's media and soon is exploited by many in the town. The Catholic Church struggles to come to terms with the events and the monk soon contemplates whether he should have even asked God for a miracle at all.
