In Slovakia during WW2 a lowly carpenter is given the chance to take over a small sewing shop from its Jewish owner after a law is passed forbidding Jewish businesses.
"Fresco about the necessity of miracle in life of man", this is anarchic, surrealist and often lovingly incoherent movie depicts stories of people of Babindol, small viticultural village in the Western Slovakia. After arrival of hedonistic Frenchman Pierre, Babindol immerse into series of celebrations, weddings and funerals, and maybe some love affairs would be sorted out, too. Havetta's full-length debut was forbidden by Czechoslovakian Communist party at the time.
A classical ballad motif about an ageing father and his three daughters is quite unusually here set against the bakdrop of Czechoslovakia of the 1950s. After having been expropriated, the former landowner Majda seeks refuge with his three daughters whom he had sent to a convent a long time ago. But only the youngest one is able to forgive him and she is willing to take care of him despite the threat of expulsion from the order. (imdb)
