Heinz Reichert

The action takes place in Vienna in 1826. We meet the composer Franz Schubert and some of his artist friends, including his namesake and faithful friend of many years, the frivolous baron Franz von Schober. The friends, who represent poetry, music and painting, live a dissolute bohemian life that stands in stark contrast to the Vienna Citizens nice life in this period, known as Biedermeier. The artists and the bourgeoisie meet, both parties need each other, and it becomes both a double wedding

To prevent loosing her property to creditors baroness Margit von Bardy, conscious of her gifted voice, opens up an Autoczardas road inn with music and singing to attract travelers. One of them is Hans Berend, whom his aunt has made believe has lost his fortune and needs a serious work now. He takes Margit for a plain innkeeper, both soon feeling attracted to each other, and has the brilliant idea of opening a gas station to complement the restaurant.

The groom-to-be in an arranged marriage falls in love with a Gypsy singer en route to his wedding, while his best man is mistaken for him by his bride-to-be, who has never laid eyes on him.
