Biography: Idrissa Ouedraogo is a graduate of the African Institute for Cinema Studies (Institut Africain d'Etudes Cinématographiques) in Ouagadougou. In 1981 he began to work for the Burkina Faso Directorate of Cinema Production (Direction de la Production Cinématographique du Burkina Faso), where he directed several short films. The short film Poko won the short film prize at the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) in 1981. After studying in Kiev in the USSR he moved to Paris

The story takes place in Burkina Faso. Poverty grows with each year that passes at Gourga, a village on the borders of the Sahel. The inhabitants must choose: either wait for international assistance to arrive or travel to a richer area of the country. Salam, a peasant, and his family opt for the second solution despite the sacrifices that this entails. They begin a new life and they rediscover what hunger had made them forget: love, joy, hate and violence.

Karim is a young peasant twelve. Since the mysterious disappearance of his father, Ousmane, he lives with Issa, a tyrant uncle, with whom her mother Aisha remarried. Karim works the land with his parents and sold in the market a few chickens or gourds. Sala, twelve years, city and daughter of wealthy people. She only comes to the village to spend the holidays. Moctar lives in Mali with his mother Saffi and his ailing grandfather. One day, Saffi receives a letter from France which overwhelms her with happiness. Ibrahim Sow, her husband and Moctar's father, who has emigrated there, can at last accommodate them. Mother and son say farewell to Grandpa, as he cannot follow them. When they arrive in Lyon, where Ibrahim is waiting for them, something strange happens. Moctar sees a hyena in a street... Of course, nobody believes him.
