In December 1981, zealous Catholic Marianna decides to use a family celebration, the baptism of the newest grandson, to reconcile her children who have been quarreling for years. General Jaruzelski unexpectedly prevents this by declaring martial law that day. Determined to reunite her family, Marianna decides to hide the truth about the situation in the country from her children. This seemingly-small lie triggers an avalanche of unexpected events that will be difficult to stop.

Pawel and his father Zygmunt make a living importing second hand clothing from France to Poland. When Zygmunt is suddenly and publicly accused of being a past Communist informant, he flees the country leaving the stubbornly apolitical Pawel to pick up the pieces and face the pervading legacy of Poland's troubled past.
