Etsuko, a Japanese woman living alone in England, is haunted by the recent suicide of her eldest daughter, Keiko. During a visit from her younger daughter, Niki, Etsuko reflects on her past life in post-war Nagasaki. She recalls her friendship with Sachiko, a enigmatic single mother attempting to rebuild her life alongside her young daughter, leading to unsettling parallels between past and present.
