The story follows a Serbian magistrate and his struggles as he attempts to unravel the plots of two young men responsible for the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. In the process of his investigations, Pfeffer encounters inconsistencies, but is forced by his superiors to state the assassination as a Serbian conspiracy. as the Austro-Hungarian politicians and military is planning an attack on Serbia.
