A WW2 story of a young Austrian soldier running from the Russian army and a woman whom he forces to come along in order to save his wounded mate.
Krabat, a beggar boy in early 18th century Lusatia, is lured to become an apprentice to an evil, one-eyed sorcerer. Together with a number of other boys, he works at the sorcerer's mill under slave-like conditions while learning black magic, such as guising himself as a raven and other animals.
The marital love between reputed doctor Tomá (Ondřej Vetchý) and his wife Milada (Zita Morávková), who together with their teenage daughter live with the latter's father, Mr. Walters (Luděk Munzar), and sister Lída (Aňa Geislerová), in apparent familial harmony is cast into doubt in the form of a 14-year-old teenage patient Olinka (Anna Linhartová), who claims to have a love affair with the doctor.
