Film adaptation of Puccini's opera: the action takes place in Rome, during the battle of Marengo. The famous singer Floria Tosca, lover of the painter Mario Caravadossi, a noble man with liberal convictions, is also loved by the baron Scarpia, the minister of pontifical police. Scarpia suspects the painter to hide a political prisoner who has recently escaped from the castel Sant'Angelo. He provokes Tosca's jealousy against the Marchesa Attavanti, of whom Caravadossi is painting the portrait.
