The series describes the accomplishments of several famous German physicians and scientists at the prestigious Charité hospital in Berlin towards the end of the 19th century.

In the early years of reunified Germany, would-be tabloid reporter Johann Rummel is desperate to score an interview with the reclusive former leader of the GDR, Erich Honecker. Rummel feigns sympathy for the fallen regime and thereby manages to insinuate himself into Honecker's inner circle. He visits Honecker in exile in Chile, finding an old and ailing man stubbornly clinging to his ideals. Based on the real-life story of reporter Mark Pittelkau.
