At a small house, there at the Yellow Woodpecker Ranch, live an intelligent and tender granny, Miss Benta, the cook Aunt Nastácia, the two cousins Lucia "Little Nose" and Pete. With them, a wise living toy made of maize named Viscount of Corncob by the kids, and Lucia's talkative living rag doll, the smart, rough and somehow magical Emilia, which possesses an immeasurable power of bringing imagination to real only by "pretending".

Dona Benta is an old lady who lives far in Sítio do Picapau Amarelo, the scene of several stories led by her grandchildren, Pedrinho and Narizinho. There also lives Tia Nastácia, a handy cook; Emília, a talkative cloth doll; Marquis of Rabicó, a greedy and clumsy pig; and the Viscount of Sabugosa, a doll made of corncobs who also came to life and is extremely intelligent.
