This picture reveals Denmark at the second half of the 19th century in the way the literature of that period (the so called critical realism) does. Aristocratic family bears the brunt of the tyranny of its head, Nils Uldahl-Ege. Once madly in love with his wife he betrays her giving way to his primitive lust. From that moment on, life of the whole family increasingly becomes intolerable due to Niles's numerous adulteries and outbursts of sudden anger.

Henriette is a fiercely independent nurse with the knack of solving all her friends problems, without being able to cope with her own. Lonely and single, she conceals a soft centre beneath a cynical, party-girl exterior, cursed by a string of worthless boyfriends and lovers.

Starting in 1949, the series follows four young Danes through 25 years of history and personal developments in a story about finding yourself in a world of changes. (imdb)

He is stingy, sneers at his friends, and is jealous in every way; he can not indulge others and do what he can to prevent it, and he is morbidly jealous of his girlfriend, which is why the relationship also breaks down at some point.
