Dreaming of future fame and fortune, poverty-stricken local boys Sanjay (Aamir Khan) and Ratan (Mamik) have different perspectives on how to achieve success in the college town of Dehradun. Hardworking and dedicated, cycling championship hopeful Ratan places all his energy in achieving victory, but Sanjay only cares about dating the wealthy Devika (Pooja Bedi). But after Ratan is injured, Sanjay must rise to the occasion to save his friendship.

Chased out of their village, a poor farmer, his wife, son and daughter attempt to survive the harsh footpath life of Bombay, when a gangster asks him to work for him.
