In order to uncover the leader of an outlaw gang who have been hiding out in Devil's Gulch near the town of Cedar Bluffs, Texas Rangers Tex Wyatt (Dave O'Brien), Jim Steele (James Newill) and Panhandle Perkins (Guy Wilkerson) plant the fake story of the escape of Spade Norton (Jack Ingram) from the Texas state penitentiary. Norton is supposed to have buried the strongbox containing $20,000 from an express robbery near Devil's Gulch. Norton has an ace-of-spades tattooed on his left arm.
