David Ladislas (Jean-Paul Belmondo) is enlisted to transport mysterious, valuable cargo to a secret location. Given his instructions by tight-lipped gamine Olga Celan (Jean Seberg), David drives blissfully into ignorance and danger as his beautiful companion parcels out just enough information to get to the next checkpoint. The pair travels from Barcelona, Spain, to Lebanon, then to Syria and across the sea again to Greece and Italy, leading to a climactic encounter in Bremen, Germany.

The singing trio of Susanne, Dieter and Juergen work at an unsuccessful student cabaret. Mr Brenders, a rich entrepreneur offers to fund them, if they change the name of the cabaret to the Lu-Lila bar with a roaring twenties motive. Disguised in black outfits and wigs, the trio soon find out Brenders has them recreating an unsolved murder case from 26 Februari 1927 in which he himself may or may not have been involved.

In the American south, light-skinned Afro-American Joe Grant leaves Memphis and moves to a small town after his 18-year-old brother Sonny is brutally lynched for attempting to marry a white woman. Joe's skin is so light that he is able to pass himself off as Caucasian and find work in a local bookstore. To get revenge on white society, Joe seduces a rich young white girl Lizbeth Shannon.
