Terry Stone and her husband Geoff are notified that their college-age son Andrew has sustained critical injuries in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. Against the odds, Andrew survives and begins a slow, painful rehabilitation. His sunny disposition aids his recovery, but is a stark contrast to his mother, Terry, who harbors anger and resentment toward the guilty party, an intoxicated rich playboy, who she wants to see jailed for all the misery he has caused.
