Neds ("non-educated delinquents"), is a film about growing up in 70s Glasgow; a coming-of-age tale that pours out of the screen in a number of emotional and narrative directions - perhaps the result of Mullan's pent-up frustration. It has muscular force, freewheeling energy and is by turns funny, tragic and scary, starting out resembling Distant Voices, Still Lives or the opening of Kes and drifting towards the menace of A Clockwork Orange.
