The Struma
In 1941 Romania, 800 Jews boarded The Struma, a refugee ship bound for Palestine. Engine failure forced the vessel into Istanbul Harbor, but under British pressure, Turkey refused the passengers sanctuary. After two months, the disabled vessel was tugged into the Black Sea and torpedoed by a Russian submarine. Only one man survived.
