Abbas Hussein is a Cairo mailman who is promoted to postmaster of a remote village in the south. The film chronicles the drudgery of his daily existence, plagued by boredom and loneliness, surrounded by a backward, hostile and uncomprehending population of peasants and petty functionaries. He unwittingly becomes a player in the life of Jamilah, the teenage daughter of a brutish farmer, who is having an illicit and dangerous affair with her best friend's brother.
