On the eve of September 9, 1944, insurgent masses liberate a large group of political prisoners from jail in Varna. Boyan Vasilev, the central character, is one of them. The joy of liberation, however, is overshadowed for him by the fact that his wife has not waited for him. He is dispatched to the frontline as a political officer.

A tenement house needs to have steam heating installed. The residents find the necessary workers to do it, sign the contract and pay them in advance. The workers show up and start their job, but disappear immediately. Panic-stricken, the residents set up to search for them, only to find the workers in jail.
