In postwar Tokyo, a middle-aged widow takes a job as a maid in a traditional geisha house to support her daughter. Through her daily routines, she observes the quiet decline of the establishment as its aging owner and residents struggle against rising debts, internal rivalries, and shifting modern values threatening their traditional way of life.
