Sunset and Frog are Border Patrolmen and have an agent that tips them off by carrier pigeon. The Army arrives and the commander is Sunset's brother. Sunset Carson's first western and, despite the misleading video box that indicates otherwise, he was billed as Sonny Carson and was billed 2nd behind Smiley Burnette. Republic dropped the "Sonny" but he was also billed beneath Burnette in three more films---Bordertown Trail, Code of the Prairie and Firebrands of Arizona---released between July and December of 1944, when Burnette and Republic parted company and Carson was given his own series that featured no continuing sidekick actor. In one of the most-used plots of the B-western genre, sometimes officially and sometimes just "borrowed" (see Movie Connections), Sunset Carson is a member of an outlaw gang led by Gil Santos, who have been holding up gold shipments dispatched from Laramie City. Sunset rebels when the gang leaves old Jeff Winters to die alone after he has been wounded in a hold-up gun fight. Sunset and Jeff break with the gang and begin operating on their own, or plan to. Sunset has two problems. Rustlers and the disertion of the Kid he helped make a Ranger. The rustlers reside in an area not as yet part of the state and out of the Rangers jurisdiction. When the rustlers are informed as to the location of the ballot box that will mean annexation of their territory to the state, the Kid learns of their intentions and to redeem himself, rides off to alert Sunset. While camping outside of town, the sheriff tries to arrest Froggy and Sunset, but a gang of outlaws help them get away. When they get to Medicine Springs, AZ, Froggy is arrested. Froggy and Sunset think that Poppy is behind all the commotion, but they do not know that Froggy is a dead ringer for Outlaw "Beefsteak" Discoe. Postal Inspectors Carson and Underwood have been sent to investigate a series of robberies where both the driver and stagecoach disappear. They team up with Pinkerton agent Bennett who has found some of the stolen money in the possession of Stevens.

Sunset Carson, ace driver for the Harding Stagecoach Line, persuades his boss Frank Harding (Edmund Cobb) to hire his brother, Jeff (Bob Steele), recently released from the penitentiary.

Sunset returns to find the Carson-Sterling feud still going. Sterling has been killed and it's not long before Andrew Carson is murdered. To end the feud Sunset challenges Martin Sterling to a shootout. Unknown to Sunset, Martin's sister Melinda has waylaid her brother and now appears for the shootout disguised in her brother's clothes.

The Texas Rangers are called in to investigate a string of attacks on wagon trains.

Governor Price sends Sunset Carson to investigate a smuggling ring which is baffling the Border Patrol. Newspaper woman Ann Morton is working incognito in the saloon waiting for a break on the smuggling story. By posing as an expected outlaw named Brazos Kane, Sunset becomes a member of the gang. Ann discovers his real identity and purpose but conceals her knowledge, even from him.

Escaping the law, Jim Parker arrives in a town that is controlled by Higgins and his crony Judge. When he stands up to Higgins he is made Sheriff only to be shot in the back, After recovering he returns to get the man that shot him. When the gang attacks, he fights back from the newspaper office. When a stray bullet nicks the printing press plate he sees that it is solid gold and its not long before the masquerades on both sides of the law are revealed.

As Bruce Lanning posts a "no trespassing" sign at a watering hole on his Circle A ranch, his sister Jane rides up with news that Wes Caven, the hired gun of the Elwood brothers, is looking for him. Soon after, Wes appears and kicks over the sign. Later, Sunset Carson, Wes's boyhood friend, rides into town to invite Wes to become a partner in his new ranch. Just as Wes declines the offer and offers Sunset a job working for the Elwoods instead,

Cimarron is a wild town overrun by outlaws. Sunset, who was framed as a cattle rustler, has just been released from prison after 3 years when he winds up in Cimarron. On his first day there, he foils a robbery attempt of the express office and kills 2 of the 3 outlaws. The grateful town makes him sheriff and the next day, he foils another robbery of the gold in the express office. What Sunset does not know is that his brother Ted is the leader of the outlaws and was the one who framed him.
