Polly Vance is at a loss as to where to get the next day's food. The children scream, "Polly, put the kettle on," but she finds only a few tea leaves. The kids are disappointed when they find no jam. Polly, though only eighteen, has been mothering these children a long time. Polly enters her father's workroom, where he is poring over the plans for the invention which he is confident will bring them riches. He becomes irritated when Polly reminds him of their poverty, and she leaves the room.
Roxbury Mecroft has to go to New York incognito to engage in some top-secret financial work, and he asks his pal, architect Terry Brock , to assume his identity while he is away. As a result, bachelor Brock has to vacation in Catalina with Mecroft's wife, Edith, and annoying little girl, Toodles. Edith has brought her sister, Connie, along on the trip and Brock falls madly in love with her.
Jack is orphaned as a young child when his wagon train is ambushed by Indians. Twenty years later, he rescues Rose from a runaway stagecoach. The two fall in love, much to the displeasure of Blaney, who later frames Jack for murder.
