Hako was sentenced to 7 years in prison on a robbery charge for the host she loved. Ayaka killed her husband to protect their son from domestic violence. These two women became acquainted in prison and forged strong bonds. After they are released from prison, they stay together and begin new lives in the old district of Yanaka in Tokyo while carrying pasts that no one must not know.
A film director, Tadashi Kobayashi, holds an audition for his new film project. Several unique actors and actresses apply for roles but most of them end up participating as extras.
Set in a rural town near Mount Fuji, the film revolves around five high school girls who decide to participate in a calligraphy demonstration event. Through calligraphy, the students develop friendships and learn how to deal with others. On the day of the event, 1,000 people show up to witness the contest as the girls express themselves by collaboratively drawing characters on huge pieces of paper.
