Germany is losing the second world war. A group of young German boys are drafted into the army and issued a meaningless task of guarding a bridge as other soldiers flee.

The human race is dying: A disease, "Calcutta-Plague', and that makes people grow old, almost overnight, keeps the gray full speed for a once already completely empty world - at least almost. The 14-year-old Tom (Tilman Schaich) wanders aimlessly after the death of his grandparents and take here and there to other survivors. A Carthusian monk, Fried Adelphi, dedicated to silence and meditation for the last 25 years, tells his story (to a priest, Michael Moriarty, in a minor role). His order sends him to Indonesia to request the extension of their cloister's lease. En route to Jakarta, he experiences claustrophobia and de-planes in New Delhi, India.
