60 23% Halloween (2018) - Feb 10, 2019
"Probably went in with a bit too high of expectations, but this was just kind of meh. The younger actors are particularly awful IMO and there are some really stupid lines in here. Plotwise this doesn't seem like anything we haven't seen before, but it picks up a little steam near the end. Doesn't hold a candle to the original IMO, and I'd even rather watch the Michael Myers-less Halloween III over this."
62 26% Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) - Jan 06, 2019
"I found this a disappointment. I didn't feel the tension. I don't know if that's because I kind of knew where this was going based on context clues, but it certainly took its time to get there. The acting is fine, but not sure I liked it as much as others. It does have style going for it, but it doesn't save this from being middling IMO."
75 62% The Lost Boys (1987) - Aug 12, 2018
"It isn't scary and outside of Kiefer Sutherland the performances aren't terribly memorable, but I found this film oddly engrossing. I probably wouldn't be in a rush to watch it again, but there are worse ways to spend 1.5 hours."
63 28% The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) - Aug 05, 2018
"There's something about the trailers for A24's horror films that always pique my interest, but I don't think I've really enjoyed one yet. This film is no exception. It's not terrible, but I wouldn't rewatch it. The acting isn't great and like most A24 horrors the plot is bizarre. Only mystery I'm left with is how Keoghan accomplished what he did."
65 33% The Birds (1963) - Jul 06, 2018
"Hasn't aged well. I didn't really think this was that suspenseful and didn't really care for the characters. It's not the worst film I've seen by Hitchcock, but he's definitely had stronger efforts."
70 47% Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) - Jun 30, 2018
"A textbook example of a film that gets an average, or 70, score from me. Nothing here is superlative, but it's the kind of film you can watch once and have some laughs about."
67 37% Hereditary (2018) - Jun 08, 2018
"Missed opportunity for Little Miss Satan starring the cast of the much more upbeat Little Miss Sunshine. Seriously though, I'm torn on Hereditary. I didn't love, but I didn't hate it. It is definitely a strange one with some decent performances, but I felt the plot could have used some more focus. I liked it more than other A24 horrors like The Witch and It Comes at Night, but ultimately it goes in my meh category. Does seem to be quite a bit to unpack here, but not sure I want to watch again."
69 41% The Post (2017) - May 16, 2018
"Sure it has Hanks and Streep and a good supporting cast, but that in itself does not a good film make. Not that the story is awful, it's just not very exciting until it picks up steam near the end. At that point, though, I was underwhelmed. I get the significance of the film with the attacks on the media becoming increasingly commonplace, but I expected more from this with the talent involved."
77 73% Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) - Apr 22, 2018
"I don't know that I loved it, but this was good. I found the character development to be great and McDormand, Rockwell, et al. give it their all. Mostly serious, but there is a nice mix of some comic moments. I wasn't the biggest fan of the ending. Of the whopping 10 films I've ranked from 2017, this one isn't the best, but it's near the top."
69 41% The Shape of Water (2017) - Apr 07, 2018
"Not bad, but I didn't find it anything superlative. It has the look of a decent film, but I wouldn't say that I was really engaged by the story. I expected more especially from the man behind Pan's Labyrinth."
