"This movie, one of if not the first speaking movies in the german film-noir, uses sound with parcimony but at great effects. None can forget the haunting tune (in the hall of the mountain king) whistled by Hans Beckert (peter lorre) when he finds a young victim for his depraved crimes. Lorre, who plays a troubled child murderer, plays his character in a way that he induces more sympathy than the victims themselves.
