"Reasonably well put together but some significant tonal problems, a lead who's solid but simply not equipped for the insane balancing act required of him, and the nagging sense that nothing is actually being SAID really kneecap this. "Pretty good" isn't the end of the world but at the same time this is mighty sensitive material to play with if you're not even really pulling it off in the first place."

"I refuse to believe that these (admittedly tepid) movies are proof that Ethan was the "weak link" or was along for the ride this whole time. That's a ridiculous unfounded insult. But, like, there IS something off here. I wonder if it's too hard, maybe even impossible, for someone of this profound calibre to intentionally slum it in a B movie pastiche this late in their career without the hunger or desperate resourcefulness that informed the choices in, say, Blood Simple or Raising Arizona."
