61% The Steel Helmet (1951) - Aug 28, 2021
"It's a good film about a terrible war. The lead, Gene Evans, is fantastic, the other performances range from average to forgettable. Obviously made in Hollywood."
61% Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) - Aug 21, 2021
"It was rather fascinating to watch the arms race of wooden naval sailing ships. Good action, but I didn't really like any of the characters, nor did they have the internal conflict and drama that I look for in a movie. But a good popcorn flick."
70% The Painted Veil (2006) - Aug 09, 2021
"Ed Norton and Liev Schreiber play Englishmen, the first a doctor, the second a rake. The scenery is gorgeous, the acting and actors are wonderful, script good and score is fantastic. It's a good movie if you like travel movies and acting, like English Patient sort of thing."
70% The Descendants (2011) - Aug 08, 2021
"A family drama about a guy whose estranged wife goes into a coma, and he spends time making things right with his daughters and his in-laws. Not a bad script, and some good good acting. Plus there's some neat Hawaiian scenes, and while the characters aren't always likeable, they always seem very real. It's written by someone who has been in Hawaii, learned it, sopped up its mess. It's a pretty and bittersweet ode to Hawaii, the way Lost in Translation is a pretty and bittersweet ode to Japan."
51% Eraserhead (1977) - Aug 08, 2021
"I can't get behind non-narrative movies, movies with just a series of fascinating images with no overarching story, so the movies of David Lynch and newer ones like Baraka are too hard for me to watch. But many people like this movie, and for good reason."
70% The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) - Jul 24, 2021
"It's fine I guess, Clint Eastwood playing a rooty-toot-tooting cowboy. Everything is fine, from script to acting to the gorgeous scenery."
70% Salt Fat Acid Heat (2018) - Jul 24, 2021
"It's very good looking, showing both the food and the land and people it comes from."
55% Ugly Delicious (2018) - Jul 24, 2021
"I like food shows, this is famous people talking about food, which isn't the same."
