Mariinka (2026) - Rated 19 Oct 2026
One of the more powerful cinema silences i've felt at the ending of a film. Small screen but no one moved until the credits ended. I dont buy the criticism that it doesnt pick a side, as its a story about some select personal stories, not Putins evil or the history of the conflict - both of which are more well told. The music was a bit cliche at times, but it kinda worked and I didn't mind how pretty it looked. It wasn't a glorifcation but showed a contrast with the horrible stories and images.

Ben'lmana (2026) - Rated 19 Oct 2026
Despite being a shortish film it managed to do the LOTR fake out at the end with a number of potential endings. It felt right story wise by the end but maybe could have been done differently to avoid it. Otherwise, excellent with some really complex characters and perspectives handled with a light touch. Decent acting considering lots of non-actors (which always seems to be the case weird huh).

Our land (2025) - Rated 19 Oct 2026
Makes it entertaining by finding some good characters, but nothing really special if you know or care a little on the subject already. Still, excellent at getting the message out there in an accessible way.

Tapered off at the end but fun.

The Taste of Things (2023) - Rated 19 Sep 2026
At some points it felt like an almost ridiculous romanaticisation of 19th century living, where everyone (including the peasantry) was happy, ate like kings and spoke with meaning at every breadth. Despite this, it was really beautiful and interesting to see a film so focused on food and its meaning in this context.

Rewatch. Enjoyed it more watching many years later. Probably more accepting of stories about the dislikable than before.

Some films are not about big events and actions you see during, but the emotion and thoughts you have after. This film is definitely in that camp - touching on many themes you might expect of growing up somewhere like rural China in the late 20th century. Cool to see these towns and landscapes you are unlikely to see otherwise also, with it also really well shot.
