"As much as I admire the basic idea of this story - by the end, when I finally understand the puzzling motivations and actions of all involved, I'm tired of frustration because it has me hanging for too long. Because of that, this movie is mostly interesting for the aftertalk that you'll have with your friend(s) - which you will have."

"Virtuose! Again! After a couple of Dardennes I'm kind of expecting a phase of fatigue, like 'well ok I've seen your techniques and they are great but making movies has a lot more possibilities than running after a great actor with a camera on your shoulder you know' - but no: no sign of fatigue: I'm again in awe of this masterclass in show don't tell and building up tension and working out these complex themes. I'm loving Olivier Gourmet! Go go Dardennebrothers!"
85 88% Rosetta (1999) - Rated 22 Mar 2024
"Gave me the same feeling as Oslo 31st by J Trier: at the end, I could totally feel and believe that she does what she does in the last act, exhausted by her position of anger, entrapment and being helplessly disconnected. The compassionate style in which the Dardennes bring Rosetta to life tells an almost biblical quest for love and charity, without being sentimental for a second, while at the same time telling us that we'd better be glad she's not our employee..."
55 17% Cries and Whispers (1972) - Rated 21 Mar 2024
"The cinematography is farfetched, it leans too heavily on symbolism and scenes cut into pieces and glued together. The acting is praised everywhere but the problem I have is that it sticks to the individual level, there is hardly any dynamic energy: most scenes give me the feeling of watching toddlers playing near eachother - it looks like there's interaction, but on a closer look there isn't."
95 98% The Kid With a Bike (2011) - Rated 20 Mar 2024
"Samantha is my new favorite hero! Dardennemovies have a tendency to depict people with rigid behavior and low skills in the emotional and interactional department, which makes them very suitable for following them close to the skin and to let the acting tell the story. She enters the sad world of Cyril with a more developed system of mentalization and with head held high, and her struggle brings me so close to the story that I end up in tears of joy about the hope that we can feel in life."
85 88% La Promesse (1996) - Rated 19 Mar 2024
"Igor rides a rollercoaster of love, hate, fear and pride towards his father, who is busy running his kingdom. The karaoke-scene is a hoot! Who wouldn't want a father like that? Who kicks you in the head the next minute?! Then we have Assitta, who is, besides a caring mother and the victim of a hideous crime, an annoyingly stubborn bull of a woman that you want to shake by the shoulders to make her act normal for just a second. All in all a genious combination of farce and tragedy."
85 88% L'Enfant (2005) - Rated 18 Mar 2024
"Watching Dardennemovies feels like coming the closest to someone elses internal conflicts as I can in a piece of art. The complexity and uniqueness of a specific individual in a specific place has so many angles and there are so many possible cliche's and fashionable figures of speech that end up in movies, that there are usually some elements that don't fit in to that specificity. With Dardenne, this is not the case: what you see is 100% that individual in that situation. Virtuose!"
75 60% Close-Up (1990) - Rated 18 Mar 2024
"A charming piece of cinema. I'm actually surprised that Hossain Sabzian, the perpetrator who must appear in court, did not follow this documentary into a career in film. He does have a kind of X-factor. It's remarkable how the filmmaker managed to get both victims and the imposter to reenact parts of the troubling events - it seems to bind them together in an act of empathy and forgiveness with a remarkably funny and touching result."
