90 90% Midnight Run (1988) - Rated 21 Oct 2020
"Hands down one of the best buddy movies to come out of the 80s. Robert De Niro gives one of his best performances as a burned out & bitter bounty hunter who hits the big score when he has to escort a fussy mob accountant (Charles Grodin) to LA. All sorts of high jinks ensure as the mob, FBI and rival bounty hunters try to thwart them. Beneath all the action is a heartwarming story about a man who recovers from a failed life. All this set to a rare blues score by Danny Elfman."
80 65% Logan's Run (1976) - Rated 21 Oct 2020
"A cool lil' Sci-Fi flick that really gets you thinking about age. Michael York shines as a 'Sandman' which is a term used to identify the police who kill residents who refuse to die at age 30. Otherwise, everybody lives in an exotic 'Domed-City' paradise. Jenny Agutter is amazing as his girlfriend. Some viewers may poo-poo the old school special effects, but Jerry Goldsmith's dazzling score should win them over in the end. An amazing coming of age story."
68 15% Bird on a Wire (1990) - Rated 13 Oct 2020
"A well meaning but ultimately lame romantic adventure with Mel Gibson as a former hippie in the witness relocation program whose cover is blown, leaving him to escape his would-be killers who want revenge for his selling them out. Goldie Hawn is in top form as a former lover who must go on the run with him. You'll want to like it for the charisma of the two leads, but the senseless twists and turns of the plot will try your patience. Only 10% of the stunts in this movie will make any sense."
75 46% Silver Streak (1976) - Rated 13 Oct 2020
"A really entertaining film from the 70s that epitomizes a lost genre -- the comedic thriller. Colin Higgins took the Hitchcock formula of a man on the run for a crime he didn't commit, threw in a train, two incredibly talented comedy performers (Wilder & Pryor), and conjured up some movie magic. A wonderful Henry Mancini score propels this entire trek into a thrilling climax. The climax by the way was accomplished with full-sized special effects (no miniatures or CGI here). All aboard!"
80 65% Crocodile Dundee (1986) - Rated 11 Oct 2020
"One of the better love stories to come out of the 80s. But to be fair to the film, it is a 'disguised' romance that starts off as a Australian travelog with a sassy New York reporter hitting the 'Outback' then bringing back a famed Croc Hunter to New York. A fish out of water story quickly turns to romance along with charming instances of humor and culture shock. Pete Best's score (no, not the Beatles first drummer) actually elevate the movie, and the ending is so satisfying and authentic."
70 31% The Running Man (1987) - Rated 11 Oct 2020
"A great little sci-fi movie that is a mix of a Dr. Strangelove-esque satire of a future police state, and a survival movie in which 'Arnold' tries to stay alive in a sadistic game show where he must fight an endless array of 'stalkers' to try and stay alive and win his freedom. Many parallels exist between this and "The Hunger Games", and it was based on a Stephen King book. It has aged much better than several other 80s action films mainly because its predictions about TV came true."
40 3% Poseidon (2006) - Rated 11 Oct 2020
"A boring and predictable remake that never should have been made. It wastes a top line cast, and made some really impressive special effects of the ocean liner turned upside down worthless. Do yourself a favor and see the original "The Poseidon Adventure" with Gene Hackman. The best quote about this movie was from Carol Lynley (star of the original TPA) who walked out of the Hollywood premiere and said "I liked our movie better.""
70 31% Jurassic Park (1993) - Rated 11 Oct 2020
"One of the all time great summer movies. Michael Crichton (who wrote the original book) said that this film was in a weird way a remake of his "Westworld" and to a certain extent he is right. Things go terribly, terribly wrong in this theme park which hosts newly created dinosaurs. Golden performances by Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern & Richard Attenborough. At the time of its release, it showcased a digital revolution (CGI dinosaurs and a DTS soundtrack), but the story still rocks!"
80 65% Night of the Living Dead (1968) - Rated 11 Oct 2020
"As this is in public domain and freely available to view, no one really has an excuse for not seeing it. Although horror may not be to everyone's taste & this film is definitely not for the young, George Romero's shoe-string production still works as a thriller and a thought provoking study of human nature under extreme duress. Duane Jones gives a masterful performance, and the ending is unforgettable. Much, much more than a horror movie...a genuinely well made thriller."
90 90% Brazil (1985) - Rated 11 Oct 2020
"One of those movies that really makes you think. Terry Gilliam's gift for satirical imagery has never served him better than it does here. Jonthan Pryce is perfect as the every man who gets caught up in a future Orwellian bureaucracy that nearly gets him killed. Tons of awesome performances from a cast including Robert DeNiro, Michael Palin, Bob Hoskins, and Kim Griest. Hilarious, thought provoking and strangely romantic. The dream sequences alone are worth the price of rental."
