While I’d argue it barely qualifies as a documentary (or even a “movie” in the typical sense), what amounts to a simple extended interview becomes as riveting as any other WWII documentary or feature film largely thanks to the deceptive power and pull of Junge’s skills as a raconteur. I’ve yet to embark on SHOAH, but the complete lack of any supporting archival footage makes this even more powerful – we are trapped with Junge and her vivid words and descriptions to create the mental pictures for us, with only occasionally intriguing breaks for Junge to listen to herself back, and add extra elaborations. I wonder how many other “blind spots” will emerge in the coming years?
