Grubby and exploitative take on what appears to be a somewhat tragic, but not ultimately edifying bio of the titular model – speaking of that, Jolie does some fine work here, both clothed and unclothed, though the sex scenes tend to verge into mechanical soft-core rather than passionate, and it’s difficult to invest much interest in Jolie’s relationship with Mitchell. Dunaway is flagrantly here for the money, though her bemused, WTF-am-I-doing-here performance is relatively fun to watch; it’s left to Ruehl to handily walk away with the film, investing her cliched “doting/smothering mother” archetype with some real substance and grit, not to mention her signature off-kilter sense of humour. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a depiction of the 80s social scene looking so defiantly late 90s!
