Even punishing myself with the 160 minute director’s cut, this is a perfectly serviceable fantasy/sword and sorcery epic that rests on an impressive array of (blackmail victims?) performers to inhabit a tale that may not be top-drawer, but is more often than not fun (and for Boll light-hearted) to watch. Gluggy pacing towards the finale, and a bit of bloat around the middle, is not enough to offset the exciting action scenes, and good-sport performances that lean in to the cast’s best attributes (I’m a sucker for a bit of Lillard smarm and he delivers in spades here). This might reflect my general fair-weather fandom for fantasy, but I really don’t see this as any worse than any number of LOTR knock-offs from the past 20 years.
