Sorry, Baby
This review contains spoilers
- To be honest, I thought it might go down a "straight white men are bad" route which wouldn't have tanked the movie because I'm not an anti-woke (or woke) guy who starts hating something because of commentary like that, but I would have cringed a little.
- Loved the sandwich guy part. He was so endearing, and he and Agnes had a really genuine conversation that was both humorous and sincere. Also love how earlier in the movie her and her bestie are eating sandwiches from his shop, so he helped her out, build a sincere connection and she became a customer. Good, subtle stuff.
- But the BEST part of the movie is when she finds the cat, picks it up and goes, "Well fuck, this is nice." Pause. "I guess... yup, I love you." That's exactly how it goes with animals.
- While I do like the tone of this movie and it's not too heavy-handed about its admittedly heavy material, I'm a big baby during movies generally so if a movie doesn't make me shed at least a single tear when it's trying to, it probably means that while it can be affective, it's not as emotional as it could be. I didn't tear up a bit here. Still works.

Mini Review: There's an aloofness to Victor's performance that could have gone either way, but I think it works for this. And the writing's smart, though at a certain point I was kind of iffy on where it might go. Didn't go that way though. Connects emotionally but I think the comedic tone it never completely abandons does prevent it from perhaps reaching higher emotional heights. With that said, I laughed at a few bits and appreciated the tone. Non-linearity was unnecessary but inoffensive.
