Little notes for full review: The reverse chronological storytelling does work. Act 3 is fascinating stuff. It's never explained, but one can assume that it's really just in his head, which makes the movie more powerful as a whole, since Act 3 would be him facing his own mortality, even though it doesn't actually include him except for as a slightly ominous (eventually) sign/billboard that says "39 great years. Thanks, Chuck." Now, I didn't know the source material or what type of movie this was going to be going in, so I thought it might go in a more interesting direction narratively. Turns out, it's a drama/character study, and that's okay. I don't think it hits as much as it should have, given its nature. But the massive shift in genre is a pretty big swing so I can appreciate that. When I say some things go on too long, a good example of that is the extended dance sequence in Act 2. I understand that dance is an important aspect of his life, but I did sit there like, okay, let's get on with it. This time could have been spent to flesh out his character more, especially since Act 1 comes in and really hammers home how important dance is. Maybe that's on me though because dancing isn't that interesting to me.
Mini Review: It starts off with a compelling apocalyptic mystery and then slides into being a drama, which is actually a pretty cool genre shift. And holistically, the way it explores issues like mortality, life and meaning is effective, though it didn't hit me as emotionally as it probably wanted to. I like how 3 is more something you have to figure out. My main issue with the movie is that some scenes go on way too long, and Acts 1 and 2 are both fine but a little uneven.
