Re: Ruby Cruz's character Jenny.

I felt so bad for her. From the moment you see her, she's been stood up, and then this guy comes over and charms her. And another girl swoops in, and sure they have a hot threesome, but then the next morning she's the one who stuck around and has sex AGAIN with the guy... and she ultimately gets dismissed as a love interest so the guy can go be with the other one. On top of that, as Deutch's character notes, she's "so nice."

Deutch is one of my favourite actresses though, and she can charm the pants off of anybody in these movies so I can understand why she'd be so appealing, especially since her and Connor had history. So I understand. This is just me elaborating on my thoughts, not criticizing the narrative choice.

Where I will level some criticism is in how it wraps up. They throw in the fact that Connor might not be the father of the Deutch baby, and it felt like a really cheap way to write themselves out of what they were doing, to make it easier for the inevitable ending where Connor and Deutch make up and love wins in the end. I actually don't hate how it ends outside of that little detail, because it simplifies a situation that the entire movie built to be complicated. It's not enough to take the film in any regard, because I thought the rest of it was so endearing, but it is a flaw.

Even still, I won't front: I really liked this. I like how it didn't shy away from its subject matter (abortion/pregnancy, a complicated threesome, etc). I dug the chemistry with the three of them, and Deutch is a rom/sadcom powerhouse as far as I'm concerned.
Mini Review: Let it be known that my love for Deutch likely propels me to enjoy this more than I otherwise would have. With that said, I was invested in the story because up until a certain point, it wasn't always clear it was going. And Cruz was incredibly sympathetic, though that might be in part because she has a naturally sympathetic face. Good premise for a rom/sadcom, and it tackles heavy themes. I think it cheaps out a little bit at the end but I guess that's to live up to audience desires.
