The Paper had some tremendously large shoes to fill, with its predecessor being one of the most beloved shows of the late 2000s and early 2010s. And it doesn't live up to those expectations, because it's not trying to; it has no interest in being The Office 2. It takes liberties and still maintains the same kind of charm, but it never feels like it's attempting to do what has already been done. Ned Sampson, portrayed by Dohmhall Gleeson, arrives at a failing newspaper company, The Toledo Truth Teller, and takes the reins as Chief Editor in an attempt to return it to its former glory. The Cast around him all deliver hilarious and memorable performances while setting up endearing plot lines that kept me invested through the 10-episode first season. My biggest complaint with The Paper is that it can feel disjointed in some spots. It’s never too noticeable, but it’s there. It would have been more air-tight if we got more than just 10 episodes. The Office had this issue as well in its first season, so it does not concern me that much. But in the end, The Paper left me pleasantly surprised as it proves itself to be a worthy spinoff to one of the best shows of the last three decades.
