A Piano for Mrs. Cimino

1982
Drama
TV Movie
Esther Cimino, a music teacher who has reached retirement age, finds that her mental faculties are slipping somewhat. The film is a trenchant, realistic study of the ravages and displacements, socially, physically, and mentally, that are visited upon a once-proud, sensitive, and still highly intelligent woman who is declared mentally incompetent by her children. However, her granddaughter who loves her rouses her back to life and helps her learn how to live again. (imdb)

Perhaps the most tragic element of many here is that this seems to mark the 70s as end of the golden age of good TV movies. Limp, enervated, unfocused, it looks like a TV show in all the worst ways. The set-up is rather like a horror film, where the menace is the creeping senility of age. Thankfully, things perk up a bit when a pre-Spinal Tap Christopher Guest shows up. Alexa Kenin provides some badly-needed grounding. Davis did what she could with the shoddy material, but that was only so much.
